Unit 7:  Reactions

Do you know that the foods you eat, the fibers in your clothes, and the plastics in your CDs have something in common?  Foods, fibers, and plastics are produced when the atoms in substances are rearranged to form different substances.  Atoms are rearranged during the flash of lightning shown in the photo on the opposite page.  They are also rearranged when you drop an effervescent tablet into the beaker of water and indicator.

Why is this important to us?  Chemical reactions affect your every second of every day.  For example, life-sustaining chemical reactions occur continuously in your body.  Other chemical reactions occur in less likely situations, such as in a thunderstorm.

In this unit, you will:

1.                     Write chemical equations to describe chemical reactions.

2.                     Classify chemical reactions.

3.                     Identify chemical reactions.

4.                     Write ionic equations for reactions that occur in aqueous solutions.
