Unit #3—Matter and Change

Imagine yourself scuba diving through a complex biological ecosystem such as a coral reef. What kinds of things fill your imagination? Regardless of what you envision, there is only one answer—you see matter. The diversity of matter in the world and in the universe is astounding. From pepperoni pizza to supernovas, it’s all matter. If we are to understand this diversity, we must start with a way of organizing and describing matter.

Why is this important to us? You are completely surrounded by matter. To better understand this matter—how it affects you, how you affect, and how it can be manipulated for the benefit of society—you need to build a basic understanding of the types and properties of matter.

In this unit, you will:

1.           Distinguish between physical and chemical properties.

2.           Classify matter by composition: element, compound, or mixture.

3.           Identify observable characteristics of chemical reactions.

4.           Explain the fundamental Law of Conservation of Mass.
