Unit 12:
Acids and Bases When ants
sense danger to the ant colony, they emit a substance called formic acid that
alerts the entire colony. Acids in
rainwater hollow out enormous limestone caverns and destroy valuable
buildings and statues. Acids flavor
many of the beverages and foods you like, and it’s an acid in your stomach
that helps digest what you have eaten. Bases also play a role in your life. The soap you use and the antacid tablet you
may take for an upset stomach are bases. Why is this
important to us? Acids and bases are
present in the soil of the Earth, the foods that you eat, the products that
you buy. Amino acids make up the
fabric of every organ in your body and are crucial to your existence. In this unit,
you will: 1.
Compare acids
and bases. 2.
Understand
why their strengths vary. 3.
Define pH and
pOH. 4.
Calculate pH
and pOH of aqueous solutions. 5.
Calculate
acid and base concentrations. 6.
Determine
concentrations experimentally. 7.
Explain how
buffers resist changes in pH. ª Notes o Ka o Kb o pH Table ª Homework o Part I o Part II o Part III o Part IV ª Labs o Investigation of Titration
